People ask me all the time, “Where did you get that?”  “I never see stuff like that when I’m out shopping…”  My response most times is…then you haven’t been out shopping with me! Lol!  No, really, the reason most people don’t see what they like when they’re out shopping is because they are looking at everything through their “Normal” set of eyes.  The key to creating a workable and fantastic personal style is to understand yourself and then GROW FROM THAT!  See yourself how you want to look and then look for those pieces.  Don’t just keep going back to the same easy shirts and pants you always wear.  Do some research and see what inspires you and gets you saying… “I love this look” then recreate it!  As we grow and age we evolve and with that so should our wardrobe.  You can’t go to the same ‘ol stores and shop the same ‘ol way forever!  To look and feel amazing you have to stretch yourself outside of your box.

Here are 4 tips that can help you do that!

  1. Combine unexpected elements to create a look that gets people talking.  I don’t like being too matchy, matchy and I like a little edge!  Something as simple as adding a black leather jacket to a flowing floral print dress and then killing it with a great handbag and shoes that mimic the jacket.  It gives femininity and edge, the best of both my worlds.  What are 2 styles you’d like to bring together?  Try it and share what you come up with!
  2. Experiment with fabric and textures, like beautiful pieces of art.  You don’t know how they’ll look together until you jump in and try it.  Sometimes it’s a slam dunk and others, not so much.  But either way, you tried it and now you know.  Pairing together a flowing, lightweight pattern with a heavier solid fabric can give you a great look and is also a great way to use items in your closet all year long, instead of just in its actual season.
  3. Accessorize to express yourself!  OH MY GOODNESS!  This is my favorite part of a wardrobe transformation and what most of my customers questions stem from.  Accessories are how we share our personality, it includes Handbags, Necklaces, Bracelets, Rings, Shoes, Scarves, Hats and a great fragrance.  Any one or all of these items can transform any outfit.  I could take one outfit and accessories it a dozen different ways depending on where you’re going and what you’ll be doing.  You can go overboard with this so if you’re ever in question, take one piece off.  But if it feels good, then work it!  Accessory sets are a collection of accessories that can all be worn together at the same time.  Like… say you wear a lot of black, with a complete accessory set there’s never a wonder of how to accessorize it, every time you wear all black, wear it all together or wear them a little at a time.  Either way you have a fool proof system to accessorizing a certain color in your wardrobe.  I think I have about 8 full accessory sets in my wardrobe that include a scarf, handbag, earrings, ring, bracelet, necklace, sunglasses and some have a hat.  They are my easy go-to accessories and all from different designers, which gives the look a depth that I love.  They are so helpful in a time crunch.
  4. Lastly and most importantly…STOP PLAYING IT SAFE!  Just because you don’t wear skirts often doesn’t mean you never should.  Just because you can wear jeans to work doesn’t mean you always should.  GET OUT OF YOUR BOX and if you need help doing that, that is what a stylist like me is for.  Peeling you back layer by layer will uncover that inner diva that we all have for wanting to look good, feel great and be noticed!  You may not think you want to be noticed but once you are, step back, you’ll be addicted to that feeling.  The only thing holding you back from that, is you.  We get these ideas in our heads that we can only do what feels safe and 10 years down the line you’ll wished you had celebrated every moment because when you do, your inner child shines and your natural beauty unfolds.  There are no bad risks in fashion.  Confidence is what makes or breaks an outfit.  Let your inner Sasha Fierce shine!  I’ve never been the smallest girl in my circle but it’s never stopped me from taking risks and putting myself out there.  Don’t let anything stop you either, you are the way you are for a reason, celebrate it and wrap that beautiful body of yours in fashion that makes you feel liberated!
